Wood generates Fire: this is called the Hidden going to generate the Flying, and is named draining qi.
Place Hai Water Descendants, the fourth line of Dui, hidden beneath Wu Fire, the fourth line of this hexagram. Wu Fire is the Flying Spirit and Hai Water the Hidden Spirit. Water controls Fire: this is called the Hidden controlling the Flying Spirit, termed coming out forcefully.
Gui Mei means greatness. It is the final hexagram of the Dui Palace, called Returning Soul. The hexagram lacks Descendants. Place Hai Water Descendants, the fourth line of Dui, hidden beneath Wu Fire, the fourth line of this hexagram. Wu Fire is the Flying Spirit and Hai Water the Hidden Spirit. The foregoing are fixed examples for the Hidden Spirits and Hexagram Body, hexagram by hexagram. Supplement to the Forest of Changes has the method of yang hidden beneath yin and yin hidden beneath yang; Complete Book of Divination has methods such as Qian and Kun coming and going and exchanging places. Because of these errors, I have set out each hexagram in detail for the convenience of later students.
For cases in which all six lines are still, and for cases in which the moving or changed lines still contain no Useful Spirit, infer it from these examples. If a changed line in the hexagram shows the Useful Spirit or Hexagram Body, there is already a Useful Spirit, and there is no need to inspect the Hidden Spirit again.
For example, suppose Heaven over Mountain, Dun, is still. It lacks Wife and Wealth. Take the second line of Qian as Water and hide it beneath Wu Fire, the second line of Dun. If the first line of Dun moves and changes into Heaven over Fire, Tong Ren, the first line's Bing-Chen Parents changes into Ji-Mao Wife and Wealth. Then use Mao Wood Wife and Wealth as the Useful Spirit; there is no need to consider Yin Wood. Apply this by analogy to the other hexagrams.
Reading note: The supplied phrase says 為水, “as Water,” although the earlier Dun explanation identifies the hidden second line as Yin Wood. This inconsistency and the compressed still/moving wording are retained rather than repaired into a different example.
(Ying [Eagle]: This says that when Mao Wealth changes forth, Mao Wood Wife and Wealth is then taken as the Useful Spirit, and there is no need to seek the Hidden Spirit again.)
