Cultivation of Crops Agriculture is the state's foundation; food is the people's Heaven. The five grains differ: recognizing their different requirements in sowing concerns the entire year. Infer it all in detail through the hexagram images. Wife and Wealth flourishing or supported permits prediction of an abundant harvest. Blessing and Virtue in Void means loss with nothing secure to rely upon. Reading note: The compact final 難憑 wording is retained as lack of reliance, rather than replaced with a different harvest outcome. Parents crossing or heavy means weeding and earthing up merely waste effort. Brothers moving means the year cannot expect a full harvest. Ghost strong and meeting a Water influence makes seedlings waterlogged and rotten. Officer at Birth with a Fire baneful influence makes crops scorched and withered. Earth is disliked when it controls Body: a year of ill-regulated flood and drought. Metal is unwelcome when it injures Self: a year of borers and locusts attacking together. Wood means destruction by wind; still, the grain must—. Generation, support or combination with Self alone permits freedom from harm. Reading note: The supplied 靜須榖 clause stops before a complete outcome. No missing grain condition is invented. Ghost at the second makes spring cultivation difficult throughout the three spring months. Officer at the fifth must obstruct the autumn harvest in the eighth month. The first strong means seed in excess. The fourth empty means the plowing oxen are not yet obtained. Response generating or combining with Self means Heaven’s intention accords with people’s intention. Repeated Wealth lines contrast much manuring with little. Reading note: The supplied 多爭壅如少壅 clause is compressed. Its much/little manuring contrast is retained without inventing a quantity or a lost instruction. The day carrying Parents means one measure of labor and one measure of heat. Wealth at Imperial Peak means timely planting and timely harvest. Reading note: “Heat” retains the supplied 熱; a different crop-maturity character is not silently substituted. To know good or ill from beginning to end, examine the moving lines’ changes. To know whether cultivation is possible, distinguish what occupies the Descendants position. Self with the Three Penalties means the farmer must carry illness. Two Ghosts among the lines means the land is jointly cultivated. Parents among outer lines with Water’s assistance means land high yet wet. Parents in the inner trigram generated by the day means a field small yet fertile. Parents changing into Parents means one plot in two sections. Clash upon Clash means seven hollows and eight pits. Reading note: The unusual middle graphic in 衝汫衝 is retained in the source; the English renders its repeated-Clash frame without supplying an extra branch. Yang image and yang line means the land follows official grain measures and assessment. Empty or moving raises fear that the field belongs to someone else. Reading note: “Official grain measures and assessment” renders the supplied 官斗則 without inventing acreage or an ownership document. Situated at Embryo or Nourishment means it was cleared recently. Changing into Blessing and Virtue means irrigation ditches are distinct. In the Kan Palace it must lie near river or lake. Hidden beneath Brothers means land rented from neighbors.
