3. Baihe, Huhuo and Yin/Yang Toxin Disorders · Pulses, Signs and Treatment

The discussion says: In baihe disorder, the hundred vessels share one source and all become ill. The person wants food yet cannot eat, is often silent, wants to lie down but cannot, wants to walk but cannot. Food and drink sometimes seem pleasant, sometimes even their smell is unwanted. It seems cold yet is not cold, hot yet not hot. Mouth is bitter, urine scarlet. Medicines fail and instead provoke severe vomiting and diarrhea. It is as though a spirit were involved, yet the bodily form seems harmonious; pulse is slightly rapid.
Headache with each urination means recovery only after sixty days. No headache but shivering during urination means forty days; easy urination with only dizziness twenty days. Signs may appear before the illness, after four or five days, or faintly after twenty days or a month. Treat according to each presentation.
Baihe disorder after induced sweating is governed by Baihe Zhimu Tang.
Baihe Zhimu Tang Formula
Baihe 7 pieces, split; Zhimu 3 liang, sliced.
Wash Baihe and soak overnight until white foam emerges. Discard the water. With fresh spring water 2 sheng, boil to obtain 1 sheng and strain. Separately boil Zhimu in 2 sheng spring water to obtain 1 sheng and strain. Combine and boil to obtain 1 sheng and 5 he. Divide into two warm doses.
Baihe disorder after purging is governed by Huashi Daizhe Tang.
Huashi Daizhe Tang Formula
Baihe 7 pieces, split; Huashi 3 liang, crushed and cotton-wrapped; Daizheshi 1 pellet-sized piece, crushed and cotton-wrapped.
Wash Baihe, soak overnight until white foam appears, discard water, and boil in 2 sheng spring water to obtain 1 sheng. Strain. Separately boil Huashi and Daizhe in 2 sheng spring water to obtain 1 sheng and strain. Combine and boil again to obtain 1 sheng and 5 he. Divide and take warm.
Baihe disorder after induced vomiting is governed by the following formula.
Baihe Jizi Tang Formula
Baihe 7 pieces, split; egg yolk 1.
Wash Baihe and soak overnight until white foam emerges. Discard the water and boil in 2 sheng spring water to obtain 1 sheng. Strain, add egg yolk and stir evenly. Boil by the supplied five-fen measure, then take warm.
Note: The five-fen wording does not clearly specify a time or remaining volume; neither is invented.
Baihe disorder unchanged from its beginning, without prior emesis, purging or induced sweating, is governed by Baihe Dihuang Tang.
Baihe Dihuang Tang Formula
Baihe 7 pieces, split; fresh Dihuang juice 1 sheng.
Wash Baihe and soak overnight until white foam appears. Discard water, boil in 2 sheng spring water to obtain 1 sheng and strain. Add Dihuang juice, boil to obtain 1 sheng and 5 he, and divide into two warm doses. Once the illness is affected, take no more. Stool should be lacquer-like.
Baihe disorder unresolved for a month and changing to thirst is governed by the Baihe washing formula.
Baihe Washing Formula
Soak Baihe 1 sheng overnight in water 1 dou and wash the body with it. After washing, eat boiled wheat cakes or noodles, without salted fermented beans.
Baihe disorder with thirst not recovering is governed by the following formula.
Gualou Muli San Formula
Gualou root and roasted Muli, equal portions.
Make a fine powder. Take a fangcunbi with a drink, three times daily.
Baihe disorder changing to fever—a variant says alternating cold and heat—is governed by Baihe Huashi San.
Baihe Huashi San Formula
Baihe 1 liang, roasted; Huashi 3 liang.
Powder and take a fangcunbi with a drink three times daily. When slight loosening of stool occurs, stop; the heat then disappears.
Baihe signs appearing in yin are rescued by a yang method; appearing in yang by a yin method. Seeing yang and attacking yin, then inducing sweat, is contrary treatment. Seeing yin and attacking yang, then further purging, is likewise contrary.
Huyu disorder resembles cold damage: silent, wanting sleep but unable to close the eyes, uneasy lying or rising. Erosion of throat is called yu, erosion of the yin region fox. Food and drink are unwanted, their smell repellent. Face and eyes turn suddenly scarlet, black or white. Erosion above makes the voice harsh—a variant says hoarse. Gancao Xiexin Tang governs.

Gancao Xiexin Tang Formula
Gancao 4 liang; Huangqin 3 liang; Renshen 3 liang; Ganjiang 3 liang; Huanglian 1 liang; Dazao 12 fruits; Banxia half a sheng.
Boil the seven ingredients in 1 dou water to obtain 6 sheng. Strain and boil again to obtain 3 sheng. Take 1 sheng warm three times daily.
Erosion below makes the throat dry. Wash with Kushen Tang.
For erosion at the anus, fumigate with Xionghuang, according to the text.
Xionghuang
Powder this single ingredient. Join two curved roof tiles as a tube, heat it and direct the fumigation toward the anus.
The Pulse Classic says the illness may erode the throat above through breathing, or anus and genital region below through the Lower Burner. Above is called huo, below fox; Huhuo disorder is governed by Zhuling San.

A rapid pulse without fever, slight vexation, silence and desire only to lie down, with sweating: on days three or four the eyes become scarlet like a dove's. On days seven or eight all four eye corners turn black; one copy inserts yellow. If the person can eat, pus has already formed. Chidou Danggui San governs.
Chixiaodou Danggui San Formula
Chixiaodou 3 sheng, soaked to sprout then sun-dried; Danggui, with no quantity supplied.
Pound the two ingredients to powder. Take a fangcunbi with fermented-grain water three times daily.
Yang-toxin illness gives a scarlet face mottled like brocade, painful throat, and spitting pus and blood. At five days it is treatable, at seven not. Shengma Biejia Tang governs.
Yin-toxin illness gives blue-green face and eyes, bodily pain as if beaten, and painful throat. At five days treatable, at seven not. Shengma Biejia Tang without Xionghuang and Shujiao governs.
Shengma Biejia Tang Formula
Shengma 2 liang; Danggui 1 liang; Shujiao 1 liang, fried until its moisture is driven off; Gancao 2 liang; Xionghuang half a liang, ground; Biejia 1 finger-sized piece, roasted.
Boil the six ingredients in 4 sheng water to obtain 1 sheng. Take at once; for old and young divide into two doses, obtaining sweat. Behind-the-Elbow and Thousand Gold Formulas instead use Shengma Tang for yang toxin, without Biejia and with Gui; for yin toxin Gancao Tang, without Xionghuang.
