Question: Heat in Upper Burner causes cough and Lung wilting. How is it acquired?
The Master replies: From sweating, vomiting, wasting-thirst with frequent free urination, or difficult stool followed by drastic purgative diarrhea. Fluids are repeatedly lost, causing it.
Question: What if the cunkou pulse is rapid, the person coughs, yet turbid saliva and foam appear in the mouth?
The Master replies: Lung wilting. If the mouth is persistently dry, coughing causes dull chest pain and pulse is instead slippery and rapid, this is Lung abscess, coughing pus and blood. Rapid and deficient pulse means Lung wilting; rapid and replete Lung abscess.
Question: In counterflow cough, how does the pulse show Lung abscess, expected pus and blood, and death after vomiting them? What is the pulse?
The Master replies: Cunkou faint and rapid: faint means wind, rapid heat; faint sweating, rapid aversion to cold. Wind strikes defensive qi and exhaled qi does not enter; heat passes through nutritive qi and inhalation does not emerge. Wind harms skin and hair, heat blood vessels. Lodging in Lung, wind causes cough, dry mouth, panting fullness, dry throat without thirst, much turbid foam and repeated shivering. Heat congeals blood into accumulated abscess pus, vomited like rice gruel. At its beginning it can be rescued; when pus forms, the source predicts death.
Upward qi, swollen face, shoulder-assisted breathing and a floating, large pulse are not treatable; added diarrhea makes it worse.
Upward qi with panting and agitation belongs to Lung distention, about to become wind-water. Inducing sweating brings recovery.
Lung wilting with saliva and foam but no cough means no thirst, involuntary urination and frequent urine. Deficiency above cannot control below. This is cold in Lung, with certain dizziness and much saliva. Gancao Ganjiang Tang warms it. If thirst occurs after the decoction, it belongs to wasting-thirst.
