On Establishing the Life Position

A spirit without a temple has nowhere to return, a person without a room nowhere to dwell, and Life without a palace nothing to govern it. Hence the Life Palace account; otherwise, on what basis could annual stars be judged harmful or auspicious?
The method first examines the birth month and hour, then determines where Life sits. Set the first month at Zi, second at Hai, third Xu, fourth You, fifth Shen, sixth Wei, seventh Wu, eighth Si, ninth Chen, tenth Mao, eleventh Yin, and twelfth Chou, moving backward through twelve positions. Next place the birth hour upon the birth month and move forward through twelve positions; where Mao is encountered, establish the Life Palace. For a Jiazi-year person born in the third month at Xu hour, place first month at Zi, second Hai, and third Xu, then stop. Put Xu hour atop Xu. The printed sequence then gives on Hai, on Hai–Zi, on Zi–Chou, on Chou–Yin, on Yin–Mao, and Mao meeting Mao. The stated result is Life at Mao. Still start according to the Jiazi year, as in the month-starting method: Jia and Ji years begin with Bing, giving the Dingmao palace. Next judge the good and ill of stars infringed through the three directions and natal circulating stems.
Translator's note: All twelve month placements are retained. The source's hour-to-palace example is textually compressed and irregular; its printed sequence and stated Mao result are preserved rather than replaced by a corrected algorithm. The heading itself prints Life Office while the body discusses Life Palace.
