On Indirect Wealth
What is Indirect Wealth? Yang seeing yang Wealth and yin seeing yin Wealth. It is everyone's Wealth, so one fears siblings seizing it and leaving blessings incomplete. An Officer star brings a hundred misfortunes. Thus Indirect Wealth likes to emerge but does not fear concealment; it only fears division, seizure, and return to Emptiness. Any of these prevents Officer from succeeding and Wealth from staying. The classic says: Turning away from Emolument and pursuing Horse, one keeps to a road of poverty in sorrow. Weak Wealth awaits a flourishing domain to gain honor; abundant Wealth finds excellence wherever it goes, provided the self has strength. Indirect Wealth makes a person generous and not very miserly. Properly placed, it does not stop; abundant Wealth can also make Officer flourish, because Wealth naturally generates Officer. Yet the person is affectionate and often deceptive: Wealth benefits oneself but can invite slander. Flourishing and vigorous cycles bring blessings and Emolument together. Excessive flourishing, however, lets many siblings cause ruin and is unfavorable. With much Wealth, compare its strength to that of my day stem. When equal, Officer's domain can bring Emolument. With abundant Wealth and a weak self, Officer's domain adds control of the self to Wealth's theft of qi: not only no Emolument, but danger of misfortune. An Officer star originally in the Four Pillars is judged a good configuration. Yet siblings appearing throughout the Four Pillars make Emolument remote even in Officer's domain. Thus one must recognize adaptation through change.
Translator's note: The initial warning about an Officer star and the later favorable original-Officer rule remain distinct as supplied.
On Punishment with Combination
Punishment with Combination means punishment containing a combination. Those afflicted often ruin the household or become ill through wine and sensual pleasure, sinking into heedless fascination as the spirit is confused. What, then, are the Combined Emolument patterns among the eighteen patterns? Gui uses Wu as Officer; Wu's Emolument is Si. Without seeing Si, only Yin punishing it is seen, while Si, You, and Chou combine. This is the form of the unseen within the seen, hence distinction. In the other cases these influences are all visibly present, hence ill fortune. Bingzi, Xinmao, Bingzi, Xinmao carry punishment and combination in all Four Pillars. Zi Water clashes with Bing Fire, and the self is weak. At twenty-six the Jiawu cycle begins; at thirty-six Bingshen. The annual Grand Year joins at Yang Blade, with two Zi clashing with Wu and Blade, punishment, and combination all involved, so death comes through wine and debauchery. Jisi, Jisi, Jiayin, Jisi have flourishing self and Wealth, with the self entering Long Life, thus entering a pattern. But punishment and combination are excessively heavy. Guihai clashes with Si, and indulgence in wine and sensual pleasure produces chronic illness and death. Yimao, Guiwei, Wuxu, Guichou is a woman's configuration, born on Wuxu in the middle ten days of the sixth month. Yi revealed in the year is Wu day's Officer. The branches' Hai, Mao, and Wei Wood configuration generates Fire within Wu, Wu's Resource Seal, completing Officer and Resource. But Guichou hour is unsuitable: Gui Water clashes with Fire within Wu, Metal in Chou hurts Officer, and punishment and combination are heavy, while Wu's Yi Officer flourishes in the year stem.
Translator's note: The cycle sequence, Hai-Mao-Wei claim despite the listed chart, and Fire-within-Wu wording follow the source without reconstructed stems or branches. The addiction, illness, and death interpretations are historical claims.
Blessing, Virtue and Refined Qi
Blessing, Virtue, and Refined Qi use their master exclusively. Yisi, Yiyou, and Yichou are examples. Yi uses Geng as Officer; exposed Killings welcome restraint and Resource Seal. Birth in the eighth month is disliked for fear of revealing Killings. Resource and flourishing Officer cycles are welcome and can bring blessings. Xin Killings exposed in the Four Pillars must be restrained. Dingsi, Dingyou, and Dingchou use Ren as Officer and welcome flourishing Metal generating Water. They also dislike eighth-month birth because Fire dies at You, but welcome flourishing Officer cycles for blessings. Do not reveal and mix the Officer: longevity will not endure. Jisi, Jiyou, and Jichou use Jia Wood as Officer, while the Si, You, and Chou Metal configuration injures it and steals qi. How is this auspicious? The welcome Metal configuration can generate Water Wealth. Fire in the Four Pillars is undesirable because it may injure Metal; Wealth cycles instead bring advancement. Guisi, Guiyou, and Guichou use Metal Spirit as Resource, with Si, You, and Chou generating Gui Water. Fourth-month birth is disliked because Water is cut off at Si. Yet Metal is born at Si and generates Water, so Water cannot be cut off. Officer and Resource cycles bring blessings. Fire Wealth is most unwelcome for fear of injuring Metal. Broadly this resembles Resource Seal, with examples afterward.
On Mixed Qi
Mixed Qi means Chen, Xu, Chou, and Wei. Chen contains Yi, Wu, and Gui; Xu Xin, Ding, and Wu; Chou Gui, Xin, and Ji; Wei Yi, Ji, and Ding. These four are Heaven and Earth's nonproper qi. Jia is stationed at Yin, yang Wood's domain; Yi occupies Mao. Both govern spring's command and pass through eastern qi. Chen lies at the southeastern corner and spring-summer boundary, receiving impure qi and a nonuniform allotment, hence Mixed Qi. Chou, Wei, and Xu are similar. Judge according to the six Jia. With a Jia day and Chou month, nobility is within: Xin is Direct Officer, Gui Resource Seal, Ji Direct Wealth. Which brings blessings? See which character emerges in the Four Pillars and discuss good and ill according to it.
As above, Storehouse contents are shut away and need the lock opened before blessings arise. What opens it? Punishment, clash, breaking, and harm. If already present in the Four Pillars, further such cycles instead injure blessings through excess. Mixed Qi generally needs much Wealth, making a noble configuration. If year or hour enters another pattern, judge by that pattern. This is mixed Heaven-and-Earth qi and cannot be pure, hence its lesser force.
Another pattern concentrated in hour or year becomes the weightier matter. Examine relative weight to select misfortune and blessings. Discuss the heavy first and light afterward, hitting the mark every time. Infer the other cases from this.
Marginal note: The Mixed-Qi verse says: A Mixed-Qi Officer star in the month's palace becomes abundant only when revealed in the heavenly stems. Much Wealth and the Officer star, punishment, clash, and breaking greatly avoid heavy suppression by stems and branches.
On Day Virtue
There are five Day Virtue days: Jiayin, Wuchen, Bingchen, Gengchen, and Renxu.
Their blessings should be plentiful, avoiding punishment and clash, with no breaking or harm. They dislike Officer, hate arriving or combining flourishing Wealth, fear Emptiness, and avoid Kuigang: these greatly violate the pattern.
Day Virtue generally makes a kindly person. Many Day Virtues bring abundant blessings. Cycles of flourishing self are exceptionally fine. Wealth and Officer arriving require seeking another pattern to escape wrongful or unexpected misfortune. If flourishing qi has declined and cycles reach Kuigang, death is certain. Before blessings have arisen, Kuigang cycles are better in Rest and Imprisonment, but one must guard against misfortune. Once free of this, advancement can recur, though strength is ultimately slight. This must be known.
Marginal note: This pattern avoids punishment, clash, breaking, and harm, which damage blessings.
On the Tomb in the Hour
The Tomb in the Hour concerns the Tomb hour of Wealth or Officer. Punishment, clash, breaking, and harm are needed to open the configuration's lock; the person must find youthful advancement difficult. The classic says: One in a Tomb does not rise in youth. One fears something suppressing it. Ding using Chen as Storehouse, for example, with such a controlling Officer as Wuchen, cannot attain office. Such a configuration is hard to call good. Something must break Wu, yet even then its blessings are shallow. The classic says: Ghost entering Tomb brings extreme peril and uncertainty. Extend the analogy and Wealth is similar. These are secret words not to be disclosed lightly.
Direct Officer Pattern
An Officer star within the month makes this pattern. Wealth also present in the hour makes a true noble person. It fears clash and avoids Hurting Officer and Seven Killings, including in major cycles. It welcomes Resource Seal, flourishing, and Wealth, likewise in years and cycles. Officer should be revealed: how could it be concealed? Like an official publicly displaying authority and virtue for the state, one becomes a great man. Suppressed by others, one is a minister's subordinate: is that not petty? A proper-qi Officer star greatly avoids punishment and clash. Many are judged Killings; a single one is truly named. Concealed Officer and light Killings, with revealed Killings, are not true. The pattern is then broken and affairs may fail.
Prefect Wang:
Yiwei, Yiyou, Jiazi, Bingyin. Xin Officer.
Chief Minister Jin:
Yimao, Wuzi, Bingzi, Gengyin. Gui Officer.
Minister Xue:
Jiazi, Renshen, Yisi, Wuyin. Geng Officer.
Grand Tutor Fan:
Dingchou, Renyin, Jisi, Bingyin. Jia Officer.
Vice Minister Zhou:
Yimao, Yiyou, Jiachen, Bingyin. Xin Officer.
Temple Attendant Chen:
Yiyou, Xinsi, Xinwei, Wuzi. Ding Officer.
Prefect Li:
Dingyou, Bingwu, Renyin, Jiachen. Xin Resource, Ji Officer.
Vice Minister Chen:
Guiwei, Yimao, Wuyin, Renzi. Yi Officer.
Marginal note: Prefect Wang has precisely the eighth-month Officer, without Mao or Ding controlling and breaking it. Temple Attendant Chen's Xin day and Wuzi hour have no Officer star and form Six Yin Facing the Sun. An Officer star in the year is Annual Virtue, welcoming Wealth reaching the self's palace. Without Seven Killings or Hurting Officer, and without breaking or clash, great auspicious prosperity follows.
Translator's note: All eight chart labels, sequences, and parenthetical assignments are retained, including annotations whose named stems are not displayed in the listed chart. They are not recalculated or corrected.
Mixed-Qi Wealth and Officer Pattern
Chen, Xu, Chou, and Wei are the four concluding seasonal months' Wealth and Officer. Resource Seal resides in Mixed Qi; revelation in the stems makes the pattern true. Much Wealth brings distinction. Mixed Qi is naturally impure; not meeting it, emergence is the guiding source. A strong self and flourishing Wealth generate Official Emolument; cycles meeting punishment and clash array precious treasures.
The classic says: Wealth, Officer, and Resource Seal are complete, stored within the four concluding seasonal months, Chen, Xu, Chou, and Wei.
Revealed Officer, Resource, or Wealth causes no obstruction. Chen contains Yi Wood, Gui Water, and Wu Earth; Xu Xin Metal, Ding Fire, and Wu Earth; Chou Gui Water, Xin Metal, and Ji Earth; Wei Yi Wood, Ding Fire, and Ji Earth.
Wang Xizhi:
Yimao, Guiwei, Renzi, Xinchou. Ding Wealth, Ji Officer, Xin Resource.
Emperor Li Liu:
Wuzi, Yichou, Yiwei, Xinhai. Gui Wealth.
First Graduate Huang:
Renzi, Jiachen, Jimao, Renshen. Ren Wealth.
Councillor Xuan:
Jimao, Xinwei, Renyin, Xinhai. Ji Officer.
Councillor Zhang:
Bingyin, Wuxu, Xinyou, Wuzi. Geng Officer, Jia Wealth.
Marginal note: Chen, Xu, Chou, and Wei are the four concluding seasonal months. Resource, Wealth, and Officer reside in Mixed Qi. Revelation in the stems makes the pattern true; ask only for much Wealth to bring distinction.
Translator's note: The Li Liu label, Gui Wealth and Geng Officer annotations, and compressed opening verse follow the supplied text without a reconstructed name or reassigned stars.
Indirect Officer in the Month Pattern
It welcomes a flourishing self and fears many clashes. The person is forceful, stubborn, and unyielding; many Indirect Officers in the hour do likewise. It welcomes Yang Blade Killing. Monthly Indirect Officer uses the earthly branch, requiring one influence and Indirect Officer cycles. If Shen and Zi occur and year and hour repeat them, flourishing Indirect Officer cycles are needed. Officer's domain is not wanted, nor the annual sovereign, because excess instead brings misfortune. Properly placed restraining cycles are required for advancement, resembling Indirect Officer in the Hour.
Director Shen:
Bingzi, Jiawu, Xinhai, Xinmao. Ding Indirect Officer.
Councillor He:
Bingyin, Wuxu, Renxu, Xinchou. Wu Indirect Officer.
Commander-in-Chief Yue:
Guimao, Dingsi, Renyin, Jiachen. Wu Indirect Officer.
Pacification Commander Wang:
Wuyin, Guihai, Bingshen, Wuzi. Ren Indirect Officer.
Wang's pattern has overly heavy Killings and welcomes eastern cycles. The self declines; the Eight Characters have much Water and faint Fire. Only Yin's flourishing Fire is welcome, a year's Fire. What benefit is Mao combining with Xu into Fire? It is also wet Wood, which does not generate flameless Fire. Wood flourishes alone and cannot generate Fire, like laying waterlogged Wood across a furnace: however fierce Fire's force, it cannot become abundant. Thus he died in Dingmao cycle. Those of the six Bing with many Hai and Zi are similar.
Chief Minister Tiemu:
Wushen, Xinyou, Bingshen, Gengyin. Xin Metal Indirect Officer.
Vice Minister Huang:
Dinghai, Xinhai, Bingshen, Gengyin. Ren Indirect Officer.
Transport Commissioner Liu:
Jiayin, Yihai, Jiaxu, Bingyin. Ren Water Indirect Officer, Wu Earth Wealth spirit, Bing Fire Food Spirit.
Marginal note: This is Seven Killings. The day stem must be in Birth and Flourishing to bear it as a blessing; a weak self unable to bear it suffers misfortune. Whatever the pattern, Killings not attacking the useful spirit may still produce blessings. Tiemu's chart has Officer and Killings overly heavy, welcoming the Yin hour's clash to transform Killings and generate the self. Helpful cycles also contribute, hence distinction.
Translator's note: The supplied Shen-Zi wording, chart assignments including Xin Metal and Ren Water as Indirect Officer, and the differing claims about eastern cycles are retained rather than normalized.
Indirect Wealth in the Hour Pattern
Like Indirect Officer in the Hour, this needs only one influence in the hour, not many. The other three places should not reveal Wealth again. It fears clash, like Indirect Officer in the Month. Indirect Wealth needs flourishing Wealth cycles.
Vice Minister Gao:
Jiashen, Gengwu, Renyin, Renyin. Jia Food Spirit.
Prefect Hou:
Yiyou, Yimao, Xinmao, Xinmao.
Marginal note: Hou's repeated stems and branches let siblings divide and seize. Wealth is abundant and flourishing, while original Xin is weak and cannot bear it; division therefore achieves balance. The verse says: Monthly Indirect Wealth is everyone's Wealth and most fears many siblings in stems and branches. A strong self and flourishing Wealth are blessings, but returning to Officer star suffices for disaster.
Direct Wealth in the hour resembles Direct Officer, without breaking, harm, or clash. No Wealth, Officer, or Killings appear in the pillars; seek this pattern in the flourishing hour.
Single Noble Influence in the Hour Pattern
A single noble influence means only one in the hour. Its repetition in year, month, or day instead makes someone toil in hard service. One Seven Killings in the hour requires a flourishing self. With much restraint in the other three places, flourishing Seven Killings cycles, or a securely placed threefold combination, can bring advancement. Without restraint, restraining cycles are needed. Flourishing Killings without anything to restrain them produce misfortune.
Monthly Indirect Officer fears clash, like Yang Blade. Hourly Indirect Officer does not fear clash, like Yang Blade. The self's birth day must flourish, as Jia or Yi born in the first or second month. Hourly Indirect Officer makes a forceful, stubborn, unyielding person, as do many monthly Indirect Officers. Four-Character Verses of Unequaled Insight says: Heavy Killings and a light self ultimately fail; one encounter with restraint brings distinction. Original Seven Killings controlled by Officer produce exceptional distinction.
Chief Minister Zhan:
Renwu, Gengxu, Jiawu, Gengwu. Geng Metal as nobility.
Shi, King of Wei:
Jiashen, Bingyin, Yimao, Xinsi. Xin Metal as nobility.
Chief Minister Li:
Jisi, Dingmao, Bingwu, Renchen. Ren Water as nobility.
Minister Zheng:
Gengyin, Renwu, Wuyin, Jiayin. Ren Water as nobility.
Minister Song:
Gengchen, Bingxu, Wuxu, Jiayin.
Minister Zhuang:
Xinsi, Xinchou, Jimao, Yihai. Yi Wood as nobility.
Marginal note: Zhan's Jia Wood dies at Wu and is born in the ninth month, with a weak day master: how can this be selected? Northern Water cycles sustain its generation; eastern Jia Wood cycles have no Killings in the branches, obtaining balanced qi with distinction within it. Infer the others by Birth and Flourishing; the subtle principle must be known. The verse says: Indirect Officer finds excellence in Food Spirit. Resource Seal and a strong self bring abundant blessings and Emolument. Direct Officer with Owl Resource, also meeting Death and Extinction, brings repeated calamity. Indirect Officer with Resource transforms into authority; cycles assisting a strong self complete blessings and Emolument. Greatly avoid a weak self with punishment and harm, bringing lifelong disaster and illness.
Translator's note: Both different clash rules, the Zhan chart discussion, and Zheng's supplied Ren-Water annotation remain as printed. They are not silently adjusted to a uniform pattern rule.
Flying Emolument and Horse Pattern
This uses Geng and Ren days with many Zi clashing out Ding and Ji from Wu as Officer stars. The Four Pillars need Yin and also Wei or Xu; obtaining one that can combine is excellent. The six Geng and six Ren use Zi to clash with Wu. A Geng day clashes out Ding Fire as Officer; Ding or Wu present in the Four Pillars reduces the pattern's measure, and the annual sovereign is likewise avoided. A Ren day clashes out Ji Earth as Officer; Ji or Wu in the pillars reduces its measure. Years and major cycles must avoid them too.
Chief Minister Qiao:
Bingzi, Dingyou, Gengwu, Bingzi. Zi clashes with Wu's Ding Fire.
Honored Consort Cai:
Jiwei, Bingzi, Gengzi, Bingzi. Clashing with Zi makes Officer.
Principal Envoy:
Renzi, Renzi, Renzi, Renyin. Zi clashes out Ji Earth in Wu as Officer.
Poor qi:
Renzi, Renzi, Renzi, Bingwu. Zi clashes with Ji Earth in Wu as Officer, but Wu hour undesirably repeats Officer, making extreme poverty and a beggar's configuration.
Marginal verse: A Gengwu day master needs Zi; Reverse-Clash Emolument and Horse are called Flying to Heaven. How do Metal and Wood make affection weighty? Southern cycles have empty opposition. Gengwu's troop of Rats clashes with Horse; Xin and Gui seeking Snake need many Pigs. A Bing day's Horse herd clashes with Zi and Wu; Ding meeting many Snakes sees Double Fish.
Translator's note: The listed charts and their Officer annotations, including Cai's Zi wording, are retained even where they appear to conflict with the stated exclusions.
Another Flying Emolument and Horse Pattern
Xin and Gui days use Hai to clash out Bing and Wu within Si as Officer. The Four Pillars need Shen and also You or Chou; obtaining one for combination is excellent. The six Gui use Hai to clash with Si. If Xu is present, Hai Water cannot clash; annual sovereign and major cycles avoid it too. The six Xin use Hai to clash out Bing in Si as Officer. Bing or Si present reduces the measure and is avoided in years and cycles. The cycle links with a lighter Grand Year; seeing Si again produces misfortune.
Chief Minister Liang:
Dingwei, Guimao, Guihai, Guihai. Hai clashes out Wu Earth in Si as Officer.
Director Cao:
Renshen, Xinhai, Guihai, Renzi. Hai clashes out Wu Earth in Si as Officer.
The verse says: Xin and Gui cycles have an ancient saying: favor combining with Si, called Flying to Heaven. Unless Heavenly Dipper meets Small Auspicious, calamity diminishes, blessings multiply, and advantage continues.
Translator's note: Xu blocking Hai's clash and the compressed cycle/Grand-Year phrase follow the supplied wording without substitution.
Reverse Clash Pattern
Use this only when the Four Pillars originally lack an Officer star. Take a Bing day as master, using Wu to clash out Gui Water in Zi, obtaining Bing's Officer. Do not discuss meetings. If Wei is present, Wu cannot clash. Gui and Zi are greatly avoided and reduce the measure, likewise in years and major cycles.
The verses say:
A Bing day needs the Wu character to clash. Wu clashing with Zi is an auspicious encounter. Do not discuss meetings; the stems dislike Water. Zi and Gui meeting make further ill fortune.
Wu clashing out Zi's Gui gives the Officer star, bringing achievement, glory, and distinction in the sacred capital. Most avoided is Wei accompanying in combination, leaving empty profit and reputation for life.
Marginal note: This pattern requires the Four Pillars to lack any Officer-star combination. It takes distinction from combining with the Officer within the hour. If the Officer is actually seen, this pattern is not entered.
Another Reverse Clash Pattern
A Ding day uses Si to clash out Ren Water in Hai as Ding's Officer star, without discussing combinations. Chen present prevents Si from clashing. Ren and Hai in the Four Pillars are greatly avoided and reduce the measure, likewise in years and major cycles. With a heavy cycle and light annual sovereign, seeing Hai and Xin again produces misfortune.
The verse says: A Ding day uses many Si to clash with Hai. Ren Water must not be in the pillars. If Chen appears among branches, it must bind them, making distinction the same.
Another verse: Ding days meeting many Si, without Water in the configuration, gain harmonious distinction. This Hurting Officer pattern should injure completely; seeing Hai's punishment and clash makes the measure empty.
Court Adjudicator Shi:
Xinyou, Guisi, Yisi, Xinsi. Si clashes out Ren Water in Hai as Officer.
Chief Administrator Yue:
Xinsi, Jiawu, Dingwei, Yisi. Si clashes out Ren Water in Hai as Officer.
Translator's note: The introductory Ding-day rule, Shi's listed Yi day, Hai-and-Xin wording, and the differing combination statements remain as supplied.
Yisi Rat Nobility Pattern
Do not use this if the month contains Officer. Wu clashing is greatly feared. Bingzi hour's Bing is excellent, called Gathering Nobility. Another statement says: Geng, Xin, Shen, You, or Chou containing Geng or Xin Metal reduces the measure, likewise in years and major cycles. Another says the Four Pillars must originally lack Officer before this pattern is used.
Court Adjudicator Yuan:
Jiayin, Wuchen, Yihai, Bingzi. Nobleman.
Imperial Attendant Che:
Wuzi, Guihai, Yiwei, Bingzi. Nobleman.
Marginal verse: Yin Wood's heavenly stem with Bingwu hour, Yisi seeking nobility has exceptional wealth. Without clashes, Officer, or Killings it is excellent, bringing youthful fame at Phoenix Pool. Take day stem as master and obtain nobility in the hour.
Translator's note: The Yisi heading, Yihai and Yiwei examples, Bingzi in the rule, and Bingwu in the verse retain their differences.
Six Yi Rat Nobility Pattern
Zi secretly combines with Si; Si moves to combine with Shen. Geng's Emolument resides at Shen, so Geng Officer is drawn out to act. Zi, Hai, and Mao hours are especially excellent. Avoid Si generating Yin, and avoid clash, harm, injury, or breaking of Zi and Yi, with no Wealth star. The six Yi days in Zi hour originally have an Officer star. Avoid Yin, Wu, and Xu clashes; one Geng, Xin, Shen, You, or Chou reduces the measure. The annual sovereign is the same; the month communicating with Wealth and Officer is also avoided. The six patterns are not used; major cycles likewise.
Translator's note: The contradictory original-Officer clause and obscure six-patterns closing follow the supplied text. No missing negative or different branch is inserted.
Combining with Emolument Pattern
The six Wu days take Gengshen hour to combine with Yi Wood in Mao as Wu's Officer. Jia, Yi, Bing, or Si in the Four Pillars punish and damage Zi and Shen, and Bing injures Geng, reducing the measure. Years and major cycles are the same.
Translator's note: The compressed Zi-Shen and injury sequence retains the supplied characters without reconstructing conditions.
Another Combining with Emolument Pattern
The six Gui days welcome Gengshen hour. Shen hour combines with Wu Earth in Si, obtaining Gui's Officer star. Wu or Si in the Four Pillars punishing and damaging Shen hour, or Bing and injury to Gengshen hour, reduces the measure. Years and major cycles are the same.
Zi Remotely Inviting Si Pattern
Two Jiazi use Gui Water in Zi to combine remotely with Wu Earth in Si. Wu and Bing share Si's palace; Bing moves to combine with Xin Metal in You, obtaining Jiazi day's Xin Officer. Thus Si, You, and Chou form a threefold Official Emolument combination. Flourishing Officer cycles are needed. Avoid Gengshen Seven Killings, Xin Officer, and Shen, You, or Chou binding the position so Zi cannot invite remotely. Wu clashing with Zi reduces the measure, likewise in years and major cycles.
Prefect Zhao:
Bingyin, Renchen, Jiazi, Jiazi.
An ordinary person:
Jichou, Jiaxu, Jiazi, Jiazi.
Zi combining with Chou binds the position, preventing remote combination with Si, movement of Bing, and combination with Xin. There is no distinction.
The verses say:
A Jiazi birth meeting Jiazi hour has Zi remotely combine with Wu in Si. Wu can move Bing, and Bing combines with You, so Jia's Xin Officer brings evident distinction.
Gengshen and Xinyou emerging are unwelcome; Chou's binding is unsuitable. Without Wu's clash and harm, cycles in Officer's domain must be exceptional.
Chou Remotely Inviting Si Pattern
Only Xinchou and Guichou days use many Chou to invite Bing and Wu in Si remotely, obtaining Xin or Gui's Officer star. Many Chou are excellent. Zi binding them prevents remote invitation. Shen and You are needed in the Four Pillars, with either one excellent. For Xinchou, Bing, Ding, Si, or Wu reduces the measure, likewise in years and major cycles. Guichou should not see Wu, Ji, Si, or Ding either.
Military Commander Zhang:
Xinchou, Xinchou, Xinchou, Gengyin. Chou remotely invites Bing Fire in Si as Xin's Officer.
Vice Minister Ye:
Yichou, Jichou, Guichou, Yimao. Chou remotely invites Wu Earth in Si as Gui's Officer.
The verse says: Xin or Gui day further meeting Chou is called Remotely Inviting Si to Combine with Officer. Do not say the Officer fails to become flourishing: an untrustworthy Officer arriving instead makes battle.
Marginal note: Hai also prevents this pattern. An Officer star may be present; Si and Hai clash.
Translator's note: Ding's inclusion in the Guichou exclusions and the permitted-Officer marginal statement follow the supplied wording.
Ren Riding the Dragon's Back Pattern
Many Chen bring distinction and many Yin riches. Ren seated on Chen Earth takes Ding as Wealth and Ji as Officer. Ren uses Chen to clash out Ding and Wu in Xu, obtaining Wealth and Officer for Renchen day, with Yin, Wu, and Xu in threefold combination. Or Ren arriving at Yin needs many Chen gathered in year, month, and hour before use. A Renchen day with Yin throughout year, month, and hour is only a wealthy configuration, with Wu and Xu giving Wealth a secure place. Many Chen in year, month, and hour clash out Wealth, hence distinction.
Translator's note: The differing Ji and Wu Officer references and the final Wealth-to-distinction explanation are retained as supplied.
Well-Rail Fork Pattern
For Gengzi, Gengshen, and Gengchen, all Shen, Zi, and Chen positions must be complete in the Four Pillars. Three Geng are unnecessary but especially excellent. A Geng day born in Shen year, with Wuzi or Wuchen in month or hour, causes no obstruction if Shen, Zi, and Chen are complete. Bingzi instead gives Indirect Officer. Shen hour gives Returning Emolument, not Well-Rail Fork. The pattern fears Yin, Wu, and Xu in the Four Pillars, which clash and break it. Geng uses Ding as Officer; Shen, Zi, and Chen's threefold combination clashes with Yin and Wu to form Fire, obtaining Officer. Judge cycles like Proper Qi. Eastern Wealth or southern cycles are good. Si, Bing, or Ding in the pillars reduces the measure, likewise in years and major cycles.
Military Commander Guo:
Wushen, Gengshen, Gengshen, Gengchen.
Official Song:
Gengzi, Gengchen, Gengshen, Gengwu. Marginal note: A Wu in years and cycles meets the original Wu, causing loss of office and wife.
Marginal note: Take Geng day with Shen, Zi, and Chen's Water configuration. Geng Metal generates Water and the Water combination has sympathetic relation. Like a well's rail and the Water accumulated inside, it is called Well-Rail Pattern.
Translator's note: The listed charts retain their branches, including missing or prohibited branches relative to the stated rule. No chart is altered to make it qualify.
Returning Emolument Pattern
A person of the six Jia days obtaining Yin hour has Returning Emolument, because Jia's Emolument is at Yin. Infer the others similarly. The Four Pillars must wholly lack Officer and Killings: seeing them makes return difficult. Flourishing-self cycles are welcome; Food Spirit, Hurting Officer, and Wealth cycles can also bring blessings. Clash and breaking are feared.
Six Yin Facing the Sun Pattern
The six Xin days take Bing Fire as Direct Officer and welcome Wu Earth moving Bing, obtaining Xin's Officer star. Zi should appear once; many Zi do not clash. Bing, Ding, or Wu in the Four Pillars make the clash with Zi fail and reduce the measure. Major cycles are the same.
Punishing into Combination Pattern
The six Gui days use Wu Earth as proper-qi Officer and welcome Jiayin hour. Yin punishes Wu Earth in Si, obtaining Gui's Officer. Gengyin cannot accomplish the punishment. Editorial note: A Gui day cannot have a Gengyin hour. Only Jiayin works. Judge cycles like Flying Emolument and Horse. Wu or Si in the Four Pillars reduces the measure. Gengyin injuring Jia and punishing Si is also feared; Shen is avoided and reduces the measure. Years and major cycles are the same.
Military Commissioner:
Jiwei, Xinwei, Guihai, Jiayin.
Vice Minister Chen:
Jiaxu, Jiaxu, Guiyou, Jiayin.
The verse says: Yin Water in Yin hour has a properly clear pattern, but fears Geng's control preventing punishment. Only cycles not meeting Snake's region obtain purity, distinction, profit, and reputation.
Flanking Emolument Pattern
Only five days form this pattern, which avoids filling the empty position. Most feared are clashes breaking the day-and-hour flanked position and injury in the Four Pillars. A day stem meeting Killings cannot maintain the flanking, reducing the measure, likewise in years and major cycles. The classic says: Flanking Emolument and Flanking Nobility become inauspicious when filled.
Flanking Nobility Pattern
Take Nobleman from the Jiayin day: Jia, Xu, and Geng take Ox and Sheep. Since this is Flanking Nobility, no punishment, clash, or filling character should be seen. Cycles of meeting and combination bring blessings only with Resource. There are six days: Jiayin with Jiazi hour, Renchen with Renyin, Jiashen with Jiaxu, Wushen with Wuwu, Yiwei with Yiyou, and Xinchou with Xinmao.
Director Xiong:
Dingsi, Bingwu, Jiayin, Jiazi.
Administrative Officer Fan:
Gengchou, Jichou, Jiayin, Jiazi.
The explanation says: Nobleman greatly avoids filling the noble position, clashes and punishments of the day-and-hour flanking, or Officer clashing with the self and Seven Killings in the pillars. These prevent flanking and reduce the measure, likewise in years and major cycles. Fan's Chou in both year and month undesirably fills the position, leaving him without official rank.
Marginal note: Jiayin and Jiazi flank Xin Officer. Read this as Flanking Nobility: no punishment, clash, or Chou filling should be seen. Proceeding through meetings and combinations, one bows to mysterious transformation.
Translator's note: Xu in the Nobleman list and Gengchou in Fan's chart are retained as printed, without replacing them with expected stem or valid cycle-pair readings.
Resource Seal Pattern
This especially needs Birth and Flourishing and avoids Death and Extinction. An Officer star in the Four Pillars is excellent. Resource Seal in the month is most important; Officer and Resource cycles bring advancement. Wealth cycles breaking Resource instead become Greed for Wealth Ruining Resource and are unfavorable. Annual influences are the same.
Mixed-Qi Resource Seal Pattern
Revelation in the stems makes the pattern true. Why would only much Wealth bring distinction? Chen, Xu, Chou, and Wei also avoid Wealth and especially need Officer cycles.
Chief Minister Lü:
Bingyin, Xinchou, Guisi, Guihai.
Court Attendant Ge:
Gengyin, Bingxu, Wuzi, Guichou.
The explanation says: Ge was a seller of hats and combs. In this Mixed-Qi configuration, the month's command reveals Bing and Ding Fire as Resource Seal. But Gui Water in day and hour gives Wealth. Proceeding through Hai and Zi Wealth cycles, six years in Renchen cycle failed to fulfill his wishes. In the seventh year, Wuzi year, second month, twenty-eighth day, Renyin day, he died. This is greed for Wealth and Earth. Infer and remember it carefully as a mirror for those who violate the rule.
Marginal note: This general discussion also avoids Wealth cycles.
Translator's note: The source's job description, Bing-and-Ding claim, date, and "Wealth and Earth" ending remain as supplied; no modern date or corrected cause is asserted.
Six Ren Hastening toward Gen Pattern
A Ren Water day master seeing many Yin uses Jia Wood in Yin to invite Ji Earth secretly as Officer; Bing Fire invites Xin Metal as Resource Seal. Wu and Shen clashes are feared, and filling Wealth or Officer is avoided. Flourishing-self regions are welcome, likewise in years and cycles. Yin is Gen Earth's direction, hence Hastening toward Gen. Ren's Emolument is Hai, which combines with Yin, so it is also Combining with Emolument. Breaking and harm are avoided; Shen cycles ruin it, and Yin is inauspicious.
Translator's note: The final unfavorable Yin statement follows the supplied wording despite the pattern's use of many Yin.
Six Jia Hastening toward Qian Pattern
Qian is Hai's palace. The six Jia days with many Hai form this pattern; with Officer or Killings, it is not this pattern. Many Hai are needed in the pillars as Heaven's Gate and the North Pole's domain, on which Jia Wood relies for growth. A Jia day with many Hai naturally brings wealth and honor. Si's clash is avoided. Jia's Emolument lies at Yin, which combines with Hai, so this is Combining with Emolument. Wealth stars, Yin, and Si are avoided, likewise in years and cycles.
Jin Anbai:
Guihai, Guihai, Jiazi, Yichou.
The verse says: Jia births welcome Hai; Hastening toward Qian is a fitting pattern. If Wealth and Officer are absent from years and cycles, reputation surely reaches Phoenix Pool.
Gouchen Obtaining Position Pattern
Wu and Ji days have Gouchen meeting Hai, Mao, and Wei Wood as Officer and Shen, Zi, and Chen Water as Wealth's region. Specifically these are Wuyin, Wuzi, Wushen, Jimao, Jihai, and Jiwei days. Punishment, clash, and flourishing Killings instead produce disaster and are avoided, likewise in years and major cycles.
Dark Warrior Holding Authority Pattern
Ren and Gui days meeting Yin, Wu, and Xu Fire take it as Wealth and Chen, Xu, Chou, and Wei as Officer. Specifically these are Renyin, Renwu, Renxu, Guisi, Guiwei, and Guichou. Clash and breaking are avoided; a weak self is inauspicious. Ren and Gui belong to Water, hence Dark Warrior. Obtaining Fire's configuration gives Holding Authority. This is simply Water and Fire Already Fording: what is different about it? It makes a gentle person with wisdom and manners, reddish-black complexion, and authority without ferocity. Punishment or clash, including in years and cycles, is unfavorable.
Commander Li:
Gengxu, Renwu, Renyin, Xinhai.
The verse says: Ren and Gui are Dark Warrior spirits. Wealth and Officer both seen make it true. Without clash or breaking the configuration brings pure distinction, an old minister assisting the imperial house.
Flaming Upward Pattern
Bing and Ding days seeing all Yin, Wu, and Xu, or all Si, Wu, and Wei, qualify. Water's domain and Metal's region are avoided. Eastern cycles are welcome, clashes feared, and the self must flourish, likewise in years and cycles. Flaming Upward is Fire's urgent force, further forming a whole through Fire's configuration. Fire images cultured brilliance. Those encountering it should wear the vermilion and purple of distinction: it is an extraordinary configuration.
Sowing and Reaping Pattern
Wu and Ji days encountering Chen, Xu, Chou, and Wei qualify. Eastern cycles and northern Wealth cycles are avoided. With all four present, Water as Wealth and no Wood's control bring blessings. Southwest cycles are welcome; northeast avoided. Sowing and Reaping all follows Earth. Repeated stems and branches form one kind of Earth with deep cultivating power. The person is trustworthy, weighty, substantial, and full-bodied, with a method of producing Wealth: a rich and distinguished person.
Perfected Master Zhang:
Wuxu, Jiwei, Wuchen, Guichou.
Marginal verse: Wu and Ji born in the four concluding seasonal months require all Chen, Xu, Chou, and Wei. Wealth's region together with Officer and Killings is welcome, but eastern cycles must bring ill fortune.
Translator's note: The differing favorable Wealth/Officer conditions in the body and marginal verse are retained without harmonization.
Following Transformation Pattern
Geng or Xin days with the complete Si, You, and Chou Metal configuration, or all Shen, You, and Xu, qualify. Southern Fire cycles are avoided; flourishing Geng and Xin cycles are welcome. Hai, Mao, and Wei are called Metal-Water Intervening Transformation. Clash, punishment, and breaking of Storehouse are avoided, likewise in years and cycles.
Day Virtue and Refined Qi Pattern
Three Yi are needed in the heavenly stems, with Si, You, and Chou complete in the branches. Bingzi, Renzi, Xinmao, and Dingyou days also have Refined Qi. Clash and control are feared, including in major cycles.
Crooked and Straight Pattern
Jia or Yi day stems take Yin, Mao, and Chen, or Hai, Mao, and Wei's Wood configuration, without Xin or Geng qi. Seeing Geng or Xin gives Officer or Killings, not this pattern. Discuss only Wood's movement, hence Crooked and Straight. Cycles welcome the north: northern Water generates Wood, following its kind. The person is very benevolent and avoids western cycles.
Abandoning the Allotment to Follow Wealth Pattern
An Yi day seeing Chen, Xu, Chou, and Wei has extremely flourishing Wealth. Yi Wood unsupported throughout the Four Pillars abandons itself and follows. The person is lifelong miserly and fills a vacant marriage place, marries into the wife's household, or succeeds as an heir. Wealth is wife; the self lacks support and relies on the wife to establish itself, hence this judgment.
Blessing and Virtue Pattern
This pattern needs only a Jichou day master with Si, You, and Chou complete in the branches. Fire's and Officer's domains are avoided, and clash and breaking disliked. Blessing and Virtue belongs not just to Ji Earth but to all five yin.
Yin Earth: Jisi, Jichou, Jiyou.
Yin Fire: Dingsi, Dingyou, Dingchou.
Yin Water: Guisi, Guichou, Guiyou.
Yin Metal: Xinsi, Xinchou, Xinyou.
Yin Wood: Yisi, Yichou, Yiyou.
Punishment, clash, breaking, and harm are avoided, likewise in years and cycles.
Marginal verse: Yin Earth meeting Snake, Metal, and Ox is named Blessing and Virtue and called Pixiu. Fire invading and controlling is not excellent: reputation and profit become empty and cease in a day.
Abandoning the Allotment to Follow Killings Pattern
An Yi day stem seeing excessive Si, You, and Chou Metal, without restraint of Killings and with the self lacking qi, can only abandon itself and follow. Flourishing Killings and Wealth's domain are needed; the day master's roots and Peers' region are avoided.
Hurting Officer Generating Wealth Pattern
An Yi day with all Yin, Wu, and Xu in the branches naturally takes Wu and Ji as Wealth. Fire-domain Wealth cycles and flourishing-self cycles are needed. Officer's domain is feared, punishment and clash avoided; reversal is inauspicious.
Hurting Officer Carrying Killings Pattern
Jia or Yi days with Yin, Wu, and Xu complete in the branches and Geng or Xin in the stems borrow Geng and Xin as authority. Fire restraining them brings blessings. Flourishing cycles are most needed, Wealth avoided, and balance brings distinction.
Marginal note: The classic says: Hurting Officer carrying Killings brings lameness or blindness. Thus seeing them is avoided, ultimately bringing poverty and early death, while restraint instead brings distinction.
Translator's note: The disability and lifespan assertions are historical judgments of the source, not established outcomes.
Annual Virtue Supporting Killings Pattern
A Jia day seeing a Geng year is an example. Year is ruler's position and day minister's: the minister obtains the ruler's authority. Year also represents ancestors and day oneself. With Seven Killings restrained, ancestors once held important office.
Annual Virtue Supporting Wealth Pattern
A Jia day seeing a Wu or Ji year is an example. Wealth and configuration possessing qi indicate inherited ancestral property. A weak self, though possessing an ancestral estate, must dissipate it without succession.
Enclosing the Hill Pattern
Day and hour branches together flank Wealth. A Jiayin day with Jiazi hour flanks Ji Earth in empty Chou's Wealth Storehouse. Yimao day with Dinghai hour, Jiawu with Renshen, and Guiyou with Guihai also qualify. The flanking must be empty, not filled or bound; otherwise it cannot operate. The day master must flourish. Flourishing-Wealth cycles are also auspicious. The song says: Few know Enclosing the Hill. Without offending Officer or Killings' positions in the pillars, pure distinction and prominence endure throughout life.
Two Unmixed Stems Pattern
Year, month, day, and hour consecutively occupy two stems, pure and unmixed. Take the two characters without disorder. It is also called Two Stems as Linked Pearls. The classic says: Two unmixed stems bring profit and reputation together. This is what it means.
