Verses on the Blazing Upward Configuration
Summer Fire blazes high into the sky. Without Water in the configuration, the verse assigns an outstanding person. Cycles reaching level ground make a useful instrument, bringing distinction and the brocade robe in a single effort.
Much Fire Blazing Upward sends qi heavenward. Without Black Warrior's intrusion, wealth and rank are complete. An eastward course of cycles is favorable, bringing official cap, tassels, and belt.
Verses on the Crooked and Straight
Jia and Yi with Yin-Mao-Chen can be assessed as Benevolence and Longevity. Complete Hai-Mao-Wei dislikes the White Emperor; encountering Kan territory brings personal honor.
Wood following its own kind is particularly excellent, but encountering autumn's command is unsuitable. This clear and elevated arrangement is assigned benevolence and longevity; a meeting with the Water source completes its blessings.
Verses on Abandoning the Self to Follow Wealth
A rootless daymaster burdened with heavy Wealth is said here to rely entirely on Resource at the hour to strengthen the self-palace. Receiving generation develops the household enterprise; repeated destruction of Resource makes everything empty.
Translator's note: Despite the heading Following Wealth, the body explicitly calls for Resource to strengthen the self. The mismatch is retained rather than corrected to a familiar following-configuration rule.
Verses on the Fortune-and-Virtue Configuration
Yin Earth meeting Snake, Metal, and Ox is called Fortune and Virtue and likened to Pixiu. Invading and controlling Fire is unfavorable; reputation and profit can vanish in a day.
Yin Fire meeting Si-You-Chou, born in a Chou month, is assigned a short life. Reputation and profit repeatedly succeed and fail; waste and sexual excess leave Emolument unprosperous.
Guisi and Guiyou, with the month 'facing wind,' signify delayed reputation and profit and unsuccessful action. Wealth and rank are difficult to hope for, and success and failure pass in bitter haste.
Yin Metal completing a configuration has prospects. A clear and exceptional pattern develops reputation and profit; Fire invading, controlling, or breaking the Four Pillars defeats both.
Western Metal qi seated on a soft yin influence fears neither Rest nor Imprisonment. Ghosts and Killings at the birth hour can bring blessings, with achievement rising step by step to Yingzhou.
Yin Wood encountering Chou, You, and Snake, born in the sixth month, sighs in secret. Office and Emolument cannot last; even literary accomplishment is insufficient to boast of.
Fortune and Virtue likes Ding and Ren. Summer encounters Jia, Ji, and Gui; Yi and Geng are favorable under autumn's command, and Xin in winter. Such auspicious meetings are called excellent.
Translator's note: The first stanza explicitly names 'Metal' between Snake and Ox, so it is not replaced by Rooster. The unclear month-facing-wind phrase and final seasonal stem list are retained without invented formulas. The sexual and lifespan judgments are historical astrology.
Verses on Abandoning the Self to Follow Killings
Earth at Mao with a complete Threefold Combination should not encounter Metal and Water entangling the natal chart. Flourishing Fire and Wood territory brings reputation and profit; further Kun and Kan bring repeated calamity.
The five yang day stems meeting only Killings are said to have an insecure life when abandoning the self. If the five yin stems come to this territory, the verse speaks of Killings arising and roots failing and says auspiciousness is difficult to claim.
Yang Water repeatedly meeting the spear of yang Earth is rootless and exposed to punishment and hardship. A noble influence within the configuration can still become prominent; repeated Officer breaking the arrangement is especially unfavorable.
A Geng day completing Yin-Wu-Xu becomes effective when the influence is exposed in the stems. Repeated flourishing Fire makes the name prominent. A natal chart in Rest or Imprisonment avoids Water territory.
The six Yi days with Si-You-Chou especially avoid Wealth occupying the configuration. Southern cycles are assigned a short life.
Yang Fire likes territory where the self is weak; Gouchen and Vermilion Bird become harmful intermediaries. An expanse of rivers and lakes with Taibai's image is assigned either general or ministerial office, or a high first ranking.
Translator's note: The separate yang and yin statements and the mixed imagery of the final stanza are retained without normalizing them to another following-configuration teaching. The short-life predictions are not established lifespan forecasts.
Verses on Heavy Killings with Rescue
Bing at Shen encountering yang Water can instead gain long life if the month provides Wu Earth. Favorable spirits arriving to rescue it bring peace, happiness, and enduring years.
Ji reaching Double Fish, with further Yi Wood, is assigned unavoidable death. Geng Metal assisting in the stems is compared to spring blossoms opening upon an old branch.
Translator's note: Double Fish is retained as the source's label without an added palace definition. The assertions of rescue and death belong to historical astrology, not established lifespan prediction.
Verses on a Single Qi in the Heavenly Origin
Bing at Shen has Fire without smoke. Yang Water makes the allotted life insecure, but Earth coming to rescue is said to bring blessings and long life.
Ji reaching Double Fish, with further Yi Wood, is assigned unavoidable death. Geng Metal assisting in the stems is compared to spring blossoms opening upon an old branch.
Bing at Shen encountering yang Water can instead gain long life if the month provides Wu Earth. Favorable spirits arriving to rescue it bring peace, happiness, and enduring years.
Four yang Water influences and four Yin positions bring contest between Li and Kan, with flourishing qi arriving. Fire cycles form wealth and rank, but guard against punishment directly opposing the governing outline.
A chart completing four Mao positions with connected Xin in the stems may have a light self and shallow blessings. More gravely, the verse fears an insecure future lifespan.
The Metal Dragon transforms in spring's third month. All Four Pillars completing it bring great authority. If not a chief minister at court, the person should gain reputation and profit on the frontier.
Repeated Jisi in the chart secretly hastens Heaven's Emolument. It signifies prominent rank and an outstanding talent surpassing others.
Repeated Wu Earth with many Wu branches gives balanced single qi in the Heavenly Origin. The verse assigns outstanding achievement, but Zi arriving in clash defeats it.
Four Dingwei positions secretly combine the yin-generating Emolument position and Womb. A proper share in east or west can bring wealth and rank; Water territory lacks a favorable relationship.
Bingshen throughout the Four Pillars lets self and Killings meet and reveal the origin of Emolument. This is assigned an extraordinary person with the power to take foremost authority.
Yiyou born in month eight likes repeated Yiyou positions. Whether or not serving close to the ruler, the person gains honor and distinction, with further achievement in later life.
Jia and Wu in the stems with repeated Xu divide and seize Wealth and Officer without benefit. Southern cycles can combine out Hurting Officer and make reputation and profit prominent.
Four Gui stems in Qian's palace, with Water and Wood meeting, form Inverted Clash. Reputation and profit can be expected, but southern cycles are assigned the end of life.
Translator's note: The repeated rescue verses at the beginning are preserved, including material also found in the preceding section. Named repeated pillars, the Four-Mao wording, and the yin-generating Womb line are retained without reconstructing a different chart. Lifespan and fortune statements are historical astrology.
Verses on Transforming Qi
Jia and Ji transform into Earth; Yi and Geng into Metal. Such configurations are subtle and difficult to find. Distinguish levels among the six configurations by the depth of their conditions before judging high or low status.
The six Yi days seated on Hai with much Wood can combine with Geng Metal exposed in the hour stem. Without generating Fire in the stems, transformation can form, though excessive Metal can instead create difficulty.
Ding and Ren transforming into Wood at a Yin hour find their blessing foundation in a Hai or Mao month's governing outline. Other month palaces require separate judgment; abundant Metal is feared for injuring the transformation.
Wu and Gui in the south produce high flames. Shengguang at the hour reveals an outstanding person. Without Water injuring year and month, the verse assigns literary presentation at Dragon Gate and victory in the brocade robe.
Bing and Xin transforming into Water are born in winter. A yin day and yang hour should be clear. Earth in the configuration must be removed from the operative arrangement; Metal assisting opens prospects.
Ding and Ren transforming into Wood like Yin and are assigned peerless literary achievement. Crooked and Straight returning to year and month brings an easy ascent in youth.
Ding and Ren transforming into Wood but entering Metal territory are likened to vainly scurrying flies and dogs. The verse predicts breathlessness, residual injury, and estrangement among close relations.
With Bing and Xin in the Four Pillars, the verse speaks of birth within the month and difficult transformation, followed by increased blessings and longevity. Repeated Earth signifies poverty and low status, with a drifting life like duckweed.
Bing and Xin in transforming combination like Shen. Brilliance in the literary academy brings a renewed prospect. Flowing Downward occupying year and month signifies no ordinary person.
The Yi-Geng Metal configuration flourishes in the west. Congkui at the hour makes it exceptional. Chen, Xu, Chou, and Wei controlling one another are said here to produce a general or minister from a distinguished family.
Yi and Geng most fear blazing Fire, which wears down ambition and is judged unfavorable. Repeated Yin and Wu make an inferior configuration, leaving a person roaming for food and clothing.
Wu and Gui in the Heavenly Origin with Water concealed in the branches bring a damaged household and many complications. Cycles encountering further generating and flourishing Water are assigned harm to wife and children and renewed turmoil.
Jia and Ji centrally transform into Earth. Chen or Si at the hour raises the person from obscurity. Year and month turning toward Fire territory reveal achievement, wealth, and rank.
Jia and Ji in the stems, born in spring, labor anxiously in vain. Many ingenious devices become clumsiness, leaving loneliness, hardship, and continual wandering.
Translator's note: The second stanza's wording about generating Fire, the terse Bing-Xin month line, and the favorable controlling relationship among the four Earth branches are retained as printed. The source's family, health, and lifespan judgments are historical astrology, not established diagnosis or prediction.
Verses on a Single Character in the Heavenly Origin
A single Heavenly-Origin character with Water as its source, born in autumn or winter, is assigned remarkable rank. A favorable spirit arriving in a major cycle brings rapid advancement in youth.
A single Heavenly-Origin character with Earth as its foundation is particularly excellent in the four seasonal Earth periods. Shen and You forming the configuration signify an unusually intelligent and refined person.
A single Heavenly-Origin character rooted in Wood reveals blessings through Chuansong and Dengming. If Officer in the Four Pillars obtains its proper ground, achievement, profit, and Emolument receive early favor.
A single Heavenly-Origin character of Metal has deep blessings with Kuigang in hour and day. Storage, Blade, and noble influences in the cycles bring lifelong admiration from noble people.
A single Heavenly-Origin character of glowing Fire has Daji and Gongcao within hour and day. Clashing out Wealth and Officer activates their use, bringing balanced wealth, rank, and flourishing blessings.
Verses on Punishment and Clash
Peer and Yang Blade in day and hour give an unfavorable indication concerning the father's lifespan. Stems and branches representing the parents meeting in combination, with a vigorous Wealth star, instead signify pine-like longevity.
Harm to the father together with injury to the wife is assigned a life in a Daoist or Buddhist religious house. Even when remaining behind closed doors, acting as guarantor requires care against implication in others' affairs; lost Wealth and calamity for the wife can recur.
Verses on Harm to the Wife
Many brother influences exposed in the stems, with Wealth extinct, Officer declining, and excessive strength, are assigned harm to the wife. If the month's command also strengthens the self, the verse pictures a young person mourning his Moon Lady.
A natal Four-Pillar chart containing Wealth and meeting Yang Blade at the hour is assigned controlling injury. Annual and cycle influences reaching the extinction of the wife relationship, or repeated injury to the wife-palace, are said to diminish her years.
Verses on Harm to Children
Hurting Officer among the Five Phases of the Four Pillars is said to leave children unsettled in their early years. Officer-Ghost cycles entering generating and flourishing territory may preserve one or two to accompany the parent in old age.
Punishment and clash in a flourishing heir position, with the month's command in Rest or Imprisonment, are assigned childlessness. Officer-Ghost in Defeat or Death under repeated control is said to leave either a child from a secondary union or an adopted heir.
Repeated Resource Seal is assigned harm to children and difficulty raising them. A child who remains nearby is described as impaired, obstinate, and difficult to direct.
Seven Killings at the hour is first called childless, but examine the principle carefully: Food Spirit in the stems and combination in the branches can instead give an exceptional, distinguished child.
Resource Seal in both month and hour in a woman's chart, with Officer and Food injured, is assigned childlessness. The text associates this with transfer into another family or founding a separate household, and says repeated orphan influences achieve nothing.
Verses on Obscured Cycles
Officer and Killings in the configuration are difficult to approach together, while repeated Yang Blades are said to assist the blessings. Pure yang among the Eight Characters with heavy Indirect Resource prompts warnings about repeated losses of wives and children.
Undertakings fail and money is wasted. Guard against harmful events as the annual influence approaches. An original hope to fulfill the Bear Omen ends instead in the obscure phrase 'full affairs and sleep.'
Peer in annual and cycle influences brings disputes, fighting, and litigation on others' behalf. Brothers, women, Wealth, and mourning affairs are named; even behind closed doors, accusations gather.
What should be auspicious instead becomes calamity. Outside relationships draw disputes. Treasures locked in a chest are difficult to obtain; affairs fail and Wealth is lost.
At this point, money cannot be kept overnight. Seeking it brings toil and suffering. If Wealth does gather, the wife is said to suffer control; otherwise official trouble and verbal disputes entangle the person.
Robber of Wealth and Yang Blade at the two ends give outward brilliance but inward emptiness. Officer and Killings at the two ends without an outlet are assigned a lamentably early death.
Translator's note: The Bear Omen is retained as an allusive expression; the following phrase is unclear in the supplied text and has not been replaced with an assumed outcome. The first stanza's favorable Yang Blade wording is also preserved.
Verses on the Origin of Lifespan
The reckoning of lifespan is called mysterious and known to few; understanding it is described as disclosing Heaven's secret. Unwelcome influences among the six relationships should not be met in annual or cycle influences.
A clear Longevity Star signifies a long life. Indirect Resource meeting it is said to be unbearable. Without the favored concubine influence coming to rescue, the allotted life is likened to withered grass struck by autumn frost.
Bing at Shen encountering yang Water leaves the full span of years uncertain. If Ren or Gui Water is exposed in the stems, the verse then predicts death categorically.
Verses on Bodily Illness and Impairment
Jiazi and Dingmao are not Blade positions; Jiyou and Gengshen are treated similarly. Combining the hidden Human Origins makes Wealth and Horse flourish, bringing distinction and riches in middle life.
Wu or Ji born with incomplete qi and Hurting Officer lingering in hour and month is assigned damage to head or face and a youth troubled by pus and blood.
A Wu or Ji daymaster with a Fire configuration steaming among the branches, under clash, punishment, control, and breakage, is assigned disability, baldness, and impaired sight.
Bing or Ding passing through declining cycles, with Seven Killings arriving through Threefold Combination, seeks rising combination but lacks food and clothing. The verse assigns deafness, impairment, and a dust-covered face.
Repeated Ren and Gui, with Killings at the hour and Heavenly Wealth appearing, are said to bring either facial marks and sores or injury to the eyes.
Flourishing Bing and Ding Fire is assigned illness difficult to prevent. The Four Pillars in Rest or Imprisonment in Chen and Si territory, with what the verse calls mutual generation of Water and Fire, are associated with loss of speech, wind illness, and an obscure death.
Translator's note: The opening non-Blade list and the final 'Water and Fire generating one another' wording are retained without correction. The bodily descriptions and causal assignments are those of the historical text, not medical diagnoses.
Verses on Women's Charts
Wealth, Officer, and Resource Seal in a woman's chart are said to benefit the husband. Avoiding excessive or mixed Killings, with a strong self and restraint, gives a recognized position.
Hurting Officer in a woman's chart is assigned uncertain blessings. Without Wealth or Resource, the text predicts isolation and poverty; exposed Hurting Officer is associated with domestic service.
A husband influence with combination should still be assessed as a principal union. Combination without a husband influence is assigned a secondary union. Repeated Officer and Killings make an inferior configuration; repeated Hurting Officer combinations are condemned without further discussion.
Officer carrying Peach Blossom is said to give blessings and longevity; Peach Blossom with Killings has little auspiciousness. Many combinations should avoid Peach Blossom, and Peer or Robber of Wealth carrying it is judged especially unfavorable.
Hurting Officer is disliked, with Wealth and Resource needed to secure blessings. Flourishing Hurting Officer injures the husband-master, but breaking Hurting Officer is then said to diminish lifespan.
Emolument and Horse Flying into Heaven and Well-Railing Fork are assigned poor blessings for women. The text restricts such women to secondary unions or sex work, while saying Wealth can bring honor.
Translator's note: The classifications of women reflect the source's historical social judgments. The warning that breaking Hurting Officer diminishes lifespan is retained alongside the earlier aversion to Hurting Officer.
Verses on Wandering
Indirect Wealth in an indirect position prospers away from home. The disposition is described as generous, romantic, and forceful. The person establishes two or three households, yet pursuit of reputation or profit brings personal ruin.
Indirect Wealth establishes a separate home elsewhere. Favoring a concubine prompts warnings about harm to the wife. Affection and desire gather wife and concubines, with a further taste for spring wine and the fragrance of wild flowers.
Verses on Bathing
Bathing is first called a harmful spirit to avoid, bringing many successes and failures that few understand. Men encountering it are assigned loneliness; women, separation.
Yet Bathing at a favorable position with leading and following influences can bring examination success through study. Do not classify it as harmful without distinction.
Peach Blossom and Bathing are then condemned for marriages involving uncles and aunts. Their presence in day, month, hour, or fetal origin is accused of violating righteousness and family relationships.
Salty Pool without Emolument is called Peach Blossom. Drink and sex are blamed for ruining the household. Further control and breakage by harmful spirits are assigned wasting illness and death.
A woman meeting Bathing is accused of ruining more than two or three households. The verse also predicts parents leaving home with shortened lives, and grief concerning the eldest son and daughter.
Translator's note: The favorable second stanza is preserved alongside the condemnations. The kinship, moral, illness, and lifespan judgments are the historical author's claims.
Verses on Long Life
Long Life is said to ensure enduring prosperity. Repetition in hour and day signifies an intelligent disposition. Favorable timing meeting it can bring examination success and entry into royal service in youth.
Long Life encountered in the chart is said to enhance the ancestral estate. Without controlling injury to parents, wife, or children, the person enjoys blessings peacefully from beginning to end.
Verses on Assuming Office
Assuming Office and Imperial Flourishing are especially excellent. Examine carefully Emolument and Nobility in the same palace. If not first place in the examinations, the verse promises inclusion on the imperial list and an end to plain-clothed status.
Verses on Cap and Belt
Few understand a chart meeting Cap and Belt. It begins with poverty and becomes favorable in middle life. Nobleman added at its proper position leaves no doubt, the verse says, of achievement and fulfilled reputation.
Cap and Belt is said to leave siblings, wife, and children free from injury. The person continues the ancestral vocation because the fetal position contains the ceremonial cap and covering.
Verses on Decline, Illness, and Death
Repeated Decline, Illness, and Death reveal good and bad fortune amid success and failure. Favorable spirits coming to rescue can turn calamity into blessings and open a successful course.
Decline and Illness together with Death are assigned an old age without wife or children. Food and clothing are insufficient, while continual calamity and illness ultimately injure the self.
Verses on Imperial Flourishing
Assuming Office meeting Imperial Flourishing continues the ancestral vocation and makes the ancestors honored. Even if the person loses position in the world, the verse says the name should still reach the ruler's hearing.
Verses on Extinction and Womb
Few recognize flourishing encountered within Extinction. Investigate it through the natal chart itself. Distinguish carefully a return to the root and original nature; do not guess when adverse conditions suddenly reverse.
A single Womb spirit is difficult to call Extinction. The verse associates controlling injury to wife and children with a declining household, continual hurried wandering, and a disposition likened to a fierce sheep and greedy wolf.
Verses on Tomb and Storage
Tomb and Storage are originally called burial spirits, yet one can function as Direct Resource and requires careful assessment. Mutual generation and accord without control allow different levels of wealth and rank.
A chart meeting Tomb or Storage is assigned immeasurable stores of grain and wealth. But the person is also described as miserly, unwilling to spend a coin, and called a money-hoarder in old age.
Verses on Womb and Nurture
Womb and Nurture require close examination: their harmful and favorable indications are said to be evenly balanced. Noble spirits meeting them bring blessings; repeated harmful Killings bring calamity.
