Explore symbols, understand change

Begin with yin and yang, the five phases, trigrams, context and change rather than predictions. Use symbolic tools to practise observation, consult the classical texts and return to facts, responsibility and everyday action.

Boundaries for reflection

Do not replace fact-checking, real-world judgement or responsibility with divination.

Do not repeat a reading until you get the answer you want.

Do not use hexagrams to frighten or control others, or to avoid making a choice.

These tools teach symbolic thinking; responsibility for judgement remains with you.

Before you begin

Clarify the question before exploring change

Consider why you are asking. Studying ideas, reflecting on an issue, repeated readings, major decisions and symbolic methods need different approaches and boundaries.

01

Understanding the ideas

I want to study the Yijing beyond using it for divination.

First ask: Do I want to understand change, or simply obtain an outside answer?

Keep in mind: Connect ideas with practical action rather than leaving them as abstract talk.

02

Reflecting on one issue

I have a specific situation and want to examine possible actions.

First ask: Have I written down the facts, relationships, risks and known responsibilities?

Keep in mind: A symbol is not a command and does not replace communication, investigation or judgement.

03

Wanting another reading

I have repeatedly asked about the same issue and still want an answer.

First ask: Am I waiting for a result I like?

Keep in mind: Repeated reassurance-seeking can undermine independent judgement.

04

Facing a major decision

My question concerns healthcare, law, money, marriage or work.

First ask: What evidence, professional advice and practical responsibilities apply?

Keep in mind: Yijing study cannot replace professional judgement or take responsibility for consequences.

05

Studying symbolic methods

I want to study Plum Blossom, six-line methods and historical cases.

First ask: Can I use cases to examine conditions instead of chasing extraordinary predictions?

Keep in mind: Do not use symbolic methods to frighten, invade privacy, control people or evade responsibility.

Four foundations

Observe change, explore symbols, consider context and take responsibility

Learning the names is only a beginning. Use symbolic tools to practise judgement, then return to facts, character and action.

Observe movement and rest

Yin and yang

Notice what is active or still, visible or hidden, expanding or drawing back.

Movement / restInner / outerVisible / hiddenFirm / flexible

Ask: Where do these contrasts appear in the situation?

Reading approach: List facts first, then explore changing relationships without reducing a complex situation to good or bad fortune.

Boundary: Yin and yang provide an observation framework, not a substitute for evidence.

Explore imagery

Eight trigrams

Explore heaven, earth, thunder, wind, water, fire, mountain and lake as traditional images for reflection.

HeavenEarthThunderWindWaterFireMountainLake

Ask: Which image might help you examine the situation from a different angle?

Reading approach: Choose an image, then consider its traditional quality: strength, receptivity, movement, penetration, danger, clarity, stillness or joy.

Boundary: Imagery should encourage thought, never frighten or control another person.

Consider context

Sixty-four hexagrams

Use upper and lower trigrams to explore inner and outer circumstances and stages of change.

Upper / lowerInner / outerContextAdvance / retreat

Ask: Do outer conditions fit the inner foundations? Is this a time to advance, retreat, maintain or change?

Reading approach: Examine outer circumstances through the upper trigram and inner foundations through the lower, then compare the interpretation with real conditions.

Boundary: A hexagram is not a command. Return to facts, ethics and actions you can take responsibility for.

Take responsibility

Ethics of asking

Reflect on context and change without avoiding judgement or repeatedly seeking an external answer.

FactsBoundariesResponsibilityReflection

Ask: Am I seeking understanding, or avoiding a choice that is mine to make?

Reading approach: Write down facts, responsibilities and boundaries first. Afterwards, choose one practical action to review.

Boundary: Stop readings involving harm, manipulation, replacement of professional judgement or repeated reassurance-seeking.

What are the inner foundations and outer circumstances of this situation?

Is this a time to advance, retreat, maintain, change, stop or wait?

If the symbol were a mirror, what habit or attitude might it prompt me to examine?

Yijing source traditions

Read the texts alongside their symbolic traditions

The tools are a starting point. Study the Zhouyi, the Ten Wings, Plum Blossom and six-line traditions within their historical and ethical contexts.

周易经文

How do judgments and line statements address action, integrity and risk in context?

Reading approach: Read the overall judgment, then each line in relation to its situation and responsibilities.

Boundary: Do not extract one line as an absolute verdict.

十翼

How do the Tuan, Image and Appended Statements develop ideas about conduct and the world?

Reading approach: Read the Tuan for interpretation, the Image for reflection on conduct and the Appended Statements for ideas about change.

Boundary: Connect ideas with facts, character and action.

梅花易数

How do images, numbers, timing and events inform this historical method?

Reading approach: Study imagery and ti/yong before changing relationships, without chasing miraculous predictions.

Boundary: Use this for cultural study, not intimidation, privacy invasion or fixed verdicts about destiny.

六爻

How do six relationships, shi/ying, moving lines and yongshen describe relationships and change?

Reading approach: Learn terminology and structure, then examine the conditions of historical cases.

Boundary: These are complex historical methods; beginners should focus on terminology, context and responsibility.

Four questions for knowing when to stop

Clarify responsibility before asking about change

A hexagram cannot take responsibility for you. In these situations, pause readings and return to facts, communication, appropriate professional advice and practical action.

Am I using a hexagram before checking the facts?

Observation of change still begins with a clear account of reality.

Am I repeating the question until I get an answer I like?

Repeated reassurance-seeking can reinforce dependence.

Would this replace relevant medical, legal, financial or other professional advice?

Major decisions require evidence, appropriate expertise and responsibility.

Am I trying to control or frighten someone, or avoid responsibility?

Harm and avoidance are incompatible with responsible reflection.
